Machame Route

Your journey begins at Machame Gate (1,800m) where you'll register with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. The first day's hike takes you through lush rainforest where you might spot blue monkeys and various bird species. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially in the rainy season.

Today's shorter hike takes you through the heath and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you leave the rainforest behind. You'll notice the vegetation becoming more sparse, with giant heather and lobelia plants dotting the landscape. On a clear day, you'll have your first views of Kibo peak.

Today features the "climb high, sleep low" principle, essential for acclimatization. You'll hike up to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp. This day helps your body adjust to higher altitudes while minimizing the effects of altitude sickness.

This short but challenging day starts with the famous Barranco Wall scramble, which looks more intimidating than it is. The trail then continues through the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp. The afternoon is free to rest and prepare for summit day.

A short but steep climb takes you to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. The afternoon is for resting and preparing your gear. You'll have an early dinner before trying to get some sleep before the midnight start.

You'll wake around midnight for tea and biscuits before beginning the challenging ascent. The steep climb to Stella Point (5,756m) takes 6-7 hours, followed by 1-2 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.

A gentle descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificates. The trail can be slippery, especially if wet. At the gate, say goodbye to your mountain crew before being transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved shower and celebration dinner.
